StonePly Stone Panels FAQ
Basic Information about StonePly Stone Panels
- What is StonePly?
- StonePly is real stone bonded to aluminum honeycomb panels (StonePly HC) or aluminum composite material panels (StonePly ACM) with aviation epoxies.
- What kind of stone options do I have for StonePly stone panels?
- Almost any stone from anywhere in the world. Granite, marble, limestone, travertine, onyx, alabaster, sandstone, bluestone, slate, etc. Over 3,500 possible options.
- What type of substrate options do I have to choose from?
-
- StonePly HC: Aluminum honeycomb - the strongest and stiffest backing. Perfect for stone cladding panels.
- StonePly ACM: Aluminum Composite Material - thin and easy to install by adhering to the wall. Perfect for interior walls and furniture.
- StonePly Translucent: Glass or polycarbonate to allow translucent stones such as onyx and many marbles to be backlit. Perfect for bar tops, windows, lighted columns and elements.
- What types of finishes do you offer?
- Most stones are available in polished, honed, sandblasted, diamond sawn, grooved, hammered. Most granites are also available flamed. Need a special finish? Call us.
- What are the benefits of using StonePly natural stone panels vs. full slab stone?
- Lower weight, higher strength, faster erection, better control, impact resistance, uniform and controlled properties.
- What is the average weight per square foot for StonePly stone panels?
- 3.5lbs per sq. ft.
- What size does StonePly come in?
- StonePly can be produced in a variety of shapes and sizes. However, the size of the stone slab will dictate the maximum size of the panel. The maximum size of StonePly stone panels is usually 4' x 8'.
- What is the thickness of StonePly?
- The thickness of StonePly depends on the backing material chosen and ranges from ¼" to 1 ½".
- Do you create custom products for projects?
- Yes. Have something special in mind? We are here to help and love a good challenge.
- Where can I find specifications?
- We have completely specifications available on our Technical page
- How do I clean StonePly?
- That depends upon the stone type used and the nature of the dirt or stain. We have a special Cleaning Technical Bulletin available for your use.
- Is StonePly fire resistant?
- StonePly HC has a flame spread of 0 and a smoke rating of 5.
- How are allowances made for movement?
- With StonePly, each stone panel is independently supported. The joints allow for the thermal expansion and contraction of the panels and the movement of the structure.
- Are standard detail drawings available for the StonePly system?
- Yes, visit our CAD page to view as PDF or download as CAD files. If you have a special detailing question, please contact us.
- Are there time or labor saving benefits from using StonePly granite cladding rather than slab stone?
- Installation time is reduced considerably by the use of the lightweight and easy to handle panels. Since the system requires no mortar, installation can proceed in almost any type of weather.
- Can mock ups be produced to demonstrate to clients how the system works?
- Absolutely. Contact us for details about a stone panel mockup for your specific project.
- How can I get help with architectural specifications and CAD details?
- We have complete specifications available on our Technical page and CAD detail available on our CAD page. If you don’t find the information you need please contact us. We are here to help.
- How does the impact strength of StonePly granite compare with solid stone?
- StonePly HC (aluminum honeycomb) panels have an impact strength nearly 60x greater than 1.5" stone.
- How easy is it to use the StonePly system to re-clad and renew an old and tired looking building?
- StonePly is very lightweight and can generally be installed over the existing wall cladding without removing it. Normally this work can even take place without a major disruption to the building occupants.
- Are StonePly panels waterproof?
- Yes, StonePly stone panels are waterproof.
Installation Information
- How do I install StonePly?

General Stone Information
- What is a metamorphic stone?
- A stone that has undergone chemical or structural changes produced by increase in heat or pressure, or by replacement of elements by hot, chemically active fluids.
- What is a sedimentary stone?
- A stone that has been formed by compacting stone particles and debri together under pressure.
- What is an igneous stone?
- A stone that has been formed by cooling magnum which causes minerals to crystallize.
- What is the stone matrix?
- The stone matrix refers to the fine-grained material surrounding larger grains in a sedimentary stone.
- What is marble?
- A metamorphic stone made of calcium carbonate. Marble forms from limestone by metamorphic recrystallization.
- What is limestone?
- Limestone is a sedimentary stone made mostly of the mineral calcite (calcium carbonate). Limestone is normally formed from the shells of once-living organisms, but may also form by inorganic precipitation.
- What is gneiss?
- Gneiss (pronounced nice) is a coarse-grained, foliated metamorphic stone that commonly has alternating bands of light and dark-colored minerals.
- What is granite?
- By geological definition, granite is a coarse-grained intrusive igneous stone with at least 65% silica. Quartz, potassium feldspar and plagioclase feldspar are the main components of granite and generally give it a fairly light color. Granite has more potassium feldspar than plagioclase feldspar. Granite normally contains biotite but it also may have hornblende.
